You are invited to participate in this study, which aims to understand the current landscape of food waste diversion from landfill within Multi-Unit dwellings (apartment buildings), and the role that Owners Corporations (also called Body Corporates) and Councils can play on this topic.

Before deciding whether to participate in this research, please read this Explanatory Statement carefully. If you would like further information regarding any aspect of this project, you are encouraged to contact us using the details above. This is a student project and will be the basis of a master research thesis.

What does this research involve?

This research project will explore food waste diversion from landfill within Multi-Unit Dwellings (apartment buildings) under a strata scheme. If you choose to participate, you will be invited to reflect on your experience and expertise in relation to this topic in an interview to be conducted through Zoom or MS Teams, according to your preference, and at a time that suits you.

The interview will include questions about:

  • Your role and experience as an owners corporation member in relation to food waste diversion and other sustainability initiatives in multi-unit dwellings

  • Views, challenges and opportunities regarding food waste diversion in multi-unit dwellings

  • Role of Owners Corporations, Councils and other groups, in supporting food waste diversion in multi-unit dwellings

The interview will last approximately 45 minutes and will be audio and video recorded for research purposes. The audio will be transcribed into written notes using AI Zoom or AI MS Teams transcription services, and your responses will be deidentified in any reports or publications. You may skip any question you do not wish to answer. We recommend undertaking your interview in a private space, such as a meeting room.

Why were you invited for this research?

You are invited to participate in this project because you have been identified as an Owners Corporation member with relevant expertise who:

  • ·Were identified by an organisation working in waste management and multi-unit dwellings, who has participated in some capacity in the community project ‘Towards Zero Waste in Mason Square’ funded by the Moonee Valley City Council and led by Yadira Narvaez Morales (listed researcher for this project), and has forwarded you the invitation to participate, or

  • Were identified by another Owners Corporation member who thought you might be interested and eligible to participate, and who has forwarded you the invitation to participate.

Consenting to participate in the project and withdrawing from the research

Participation in this study is voluntary. At the start of the interview, the interviewer will confirm that you have read and understood this Explanatory Statement and that you consent to the interview being audio/video recorded.

Withdrawal:

  • You may choose not to proceed or to stop the interview by telling us.

  • You may request that your data be removed from this research project by contacting us using the contact details at the top of this statement and up to one (1) day after your interview. After this period, your data might have been deidentified and it will be no longer possible to delete.

Your choice to participate or not participate in this research is completely voluntary and it will pose no consequences. If you choose to withdraw from this research, before, during or after your interview, your choice will also pose no consequences.

Confidentiality

The confidentiality of your responses during this study will be protected. The interview will be audio and video recorded for research purposes and only the research team will have access to your interview recording and any information linking your name to your data. The audio will be transcribed into written notes using AI Zoom or AI MS Teams transcription services, and your contact information and interview recording will be deleted when it is no longer required.

The data gathered from your interview will be aggregated with data from other interviews and will become part of a master research thesis publication, journal articles, and/or conference proceedings.

The findings will be presented in deidentified summary form. However, due to the nature of the project and the professional roles of participants, there is a possibility that individuals may be identifiable based on the context of their responses (e.g., references to specific regions or roles). Statements or quotes from the research may be used to illustrate key themes, but only when they do not contain information that could reasonably identify you or any other person.

Storage of data

Your deidentified data will be stored for at least 5 years on secure Monash University servers in accordance with Monash University’s privacy policies and will be accessible only to members of the research team (current and future). The data will be deleted after 5 years.

Use of data for other purposes

We may use the data collected for this research project for comparative purposes in future research relevant to this project. Only aggregate de-identified data would be used for other projects where ethics approval has been granted.

Results

The data gathered from your interview will be aggregated with data from other interviews and thematically analysed. The thematic analysis will become part of a master research thesis publication. We may also publish findings in peer-reviewed academic journals or conferences proceedings. You may request a copy of the published master thesis by contacting us using the details provided above.
